New York State Insider: New York State Senator Shelley Mayer: All New Yorkers deserve equal protection under the law.

 

Yesterday, I was proud to speak on the Senate floor in support of the Equal Rights Amendment (S51002)  which is a Constitutional amendment explicitly prohibiting sex discrimination- including pregnancy and reproductive healthcare. As we celebrate our freedom this 4th of July holiday weekend, there could be no more appropriate time for this legislation to pass.

This amendment elevates the rights of millions of New Yorkers in our State Constitution. It grants constitutional protections to women, LGBTQ New Yorkers, and New Yorkers of color, all while protecting the rights of people to practice their religion. It places all New Yorkers on an equal footing in the eyes of the law, but most importantly it is a powerful statement that New York’s diversity is its strength, and that each and every New Yorker will always enjoy the equal protection of the laws of this State. 

We face a radicalized Supreme Court which no longer recognizes or abides by settled law. As your State Senator, I thank you for your support and pledge I will always fight to protect the reproductive rights of women and to ensure equality for all New Yorkers.
