Today’s announcement by the CDC makes it clear that the extreme risks from COVID-19 have diminished significantly nationally and we need to move towards coexistence with the virus consistent with scientific findings. In light of the CDC’s decision, I believe it is now time to adopt new rules in New York State with respect to masks. To that end, I urge Governor Hochul to immediately: Remove the mandate of masks in compliance with CDC recommendations in schools and preschools in those counties of NYS identified by the CDC as at low or medium levels of risk; Provide detailed guidance to parents, school districts, teachers and other staff with respect to the factors that would trigger reintroduction of a mask mandate in schools on a regional or county-wide basis; Encourage parents and guardians of children 5 and up to get children vaccinated as soon as possible, including getting booster shots, where medically appropriate; and Direct schools and preschools to adhere to CDC guidance regarding continued use of masks by individuals at higher risk of severe illness in accordance with CDC guidance.  Many parents and education stakeholders are concerned that the ongoing requirement of masks in schools is no longer necessary or scientifically justified. Others fear that the removal of the mask mandate poses ongoing threats to young children unable to be vaccinated, or to teachers and staff who are not able to receive the vaccine. I am hopeful these disagreements can be voiced civilly and respectfully as we move ahead. I have deferred to the CDC for expert guidance during the duration of the COVID pandemic, and today’s announcement should prompt Governor Hochul to take action in accordance with that guidance.

posito's bid for lieutenant governor makes her the latest candidate for the job. Suozzi last week selected former New York City Councilmember Diana Reyna as his preferred running mate. 

"I will fight for the future of our state, the future of my niece and nephews and the future of all New York's children," Esposito said.  

Candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run separately in party primaries and the winners are later joined on a ticket in the general election. Mismatches can occur, most recentely in 2010 when then-GOP nominee for governor Carl Paladino was paired with rival Rick Lazio's preferred candidate for lieutenant governor, Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards. 

The GOP field for governor in recent days has grown in the days leading up to the Republican convention even as Zeldin has locked up endorsements from county leaders in the party.

Zeldin faces former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, former Trump administration official Andrew Giuliani and businessman Harry Wilson for the Republican nomination.

New York State Insider: Statement from New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt: Democrats Say No to Bail Law Changes. Dangerousness not an Issue for Them.

There you have it.

Despite murder and mayhem on our streets, Democrat leaders in Albany say no to changes to their bail law legislation.

They won’t even allow a judge to consider the dangerousness of the accused criminal standing in front of them. They say such a consideration is “racist”; I say it is just common sense to have a judge – looking at the criminal history of a defendant – to decide if someone is too dangerous to be released on bail.

Albany and New York City Democrats say no, despite the evidence all around us.

On the heels of another person – this time a young, Asian woman – brutally murdered in Manhattan, Democrats turn a blind eye. The accused killer? A homeless guy with a long criminal rap sheet and a pending assault charge – previously released without bail.

After two young, New York City police officers were gunned down recently by another guy with a long criminal record, Democrat leaders of the Senate and Assembly recorded their condolences. 

But they, and Gov. Kathy Hochul remain adamant. They will not even discuss changes to reckless laws, such as bail “reform” or raise the age.

The only way to bring change to New York is to change those in charge.
