FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Statement from Rob Astorino on Congestion Pricing Tax Madness.
“Has Governor Kathy Hochul ever heard of the
Law of Unintended Consequences?”
May 5, 2022
“New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer is absolutely right to call on his constituents to work from their home state if New York City’s Congestion Pricing Tax is passed. What he suggests is a simple matter of common sense — a quality virtually unknown in the halls of New York government.
“Putting up an elitist paywall to travel south of 60th Street in Manhattan, at the very same time we’re trying to revitalize midtown and Manhattan’s Financial District, is downright idiotic. Has Governor Kathy Hochul ever heard of the Law of Unintended Consequences?
“A Congestion Pricing paywall will not only inhibit the City’s ability to revitalize our state’s core business districts, it will hurt low- and middle-income New Yorkers the most, and make traffic north of 60th Street in Manhattan and in the other four boroughs an even greater nightmare than it is now. It will also move carbon-belching truck traffic into low-income communities where asthma rates are already too high.
“The Congestion Pricing Tax - estimated at $9 to $35 per trip - would be totally counterproductive for New York, and as governor, I’ll stop it from moving forward so that New York City can return to being the nation’s economic center.”
