Senator Biaggi Issues Statement on the Jacobi Just Home Initiative.
BRONX, NY – Jacobi Hospital, in collaboration with the Fortune Society, plans to convert a vacant building on their campus into a Correctional Health and Housing Initiative. The Just Home initiative will create 70 studio apartments, with 60% of units reserved for those involved with the incarceral system who are considered medically vulnerable and 40% of units for low-income individuals (<$39,000/year). Individuals living in these units will be provided intensive, on-site social services and will have close access to health services at Jacobi Hospital. The property is not expected to open until 2025 at the earliest.
State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx/Westchester) issued the following statement:
“I am in full support of the Jacobi Hospital Just Home initiative. This plan serves as an example of what the future of affordable housing can look like— the conversion of unused, vacant buildings into assisted living and affordable housing for the most vulnerable. Access to stable, affordable housing is crucial for the health and wellbeing of individuals exiting the incarceral system, and this initiative will allow individuals to live with dignity while receiving the social services and health care they need upon reentry. I commend Jacobi Hospital and the Fortune Society for leading the way, and hope that the community supports them in their efforts.”
